Basketball

Basketball is a fast-paced team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket elevated 10 feet above the ground. The objective is to score more points than the opposing team within a set time limit. The game is played on a rectangular court with a hoop at each end, and players can advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball) or passing it to teammates.

Founded in the late 19th century by Dr. James Naismith, basketball has grown in popularity globally and is played professionally and recreationally. Players can score points through field goals, worth two or three points depending on the distance from the hoop, and free throws, which are awarded after certain fouls and are worth one point each. Key skills in basketball include shooting, passing, dribbling, and defensive maneuvers.

Basketball is characterized by its unique blend of athleticism, strategy, and teamwork, and it is widely recognized for its cultural impact, particularly in the United States, where it is a major professional sport. Competitions range from local leagues to international events, including the Olympics and the FIBA World Cup.
